Home in on Sanford for the reunion activities, June 26 – 29, 2008!

Although I have no official connection with any planning committee for the events of the weekend, I thought that I would take this opportunity to pass along information that has come my way. If I make an error and pass along any bum dope, I trust that someone will correct me.

FIRST:
On the FRA (Fleet Reserve Association) web site I have found an announcement of a reunion at Sanford. The information is as follows:
Scheduled Reunions

NAS Sanford Florida and all squadrons 06/26/2008 Thru 06/29/2008
Status: ACTIVE
Reunion Start Date: 06/26/2008
Reunion End Date: 06/29/2008
Reunion City/State: SANFORD, FLORIDA
Reunion Contact Person: JERRY BOHM
Reunion Contact Address: 450 River Drive DeBary, FL 32713-9711
Reunion Contact Phone: 386-668-4851
Contact Email:
Location Website:
Reunion Website:
Reunion Description: THIS WILL BE THE 40TH ANNIVERSEY OF NAS SANFORD CLOSING. SQUADRON AND STATION PERSONNEL WELCOME
It might also be noted that 2008 marks the 60th year since VC-5 was formed (albeit on the west coast at Moffett Field, NAS Sunnyvale, California on 9 September 1948), the 55th year since VC-9 was commissioned at Sanford (15 January 1953), and the 55th year since VC-5 moved from NAS JAX to NAAS Sanford (April 1953). [Kenneth Wooster]
I have dropped a note to Jerry requesting a copy of the flyer.
SECOND:
The NEBNA (Naval Enlisted Bombardier Navigator Assocition) website at http://www.nebna.org/ has a file at http://www.nebna.org/meetings.html that as of now (7 March 2008) still does NOT have a meeting at Sanford scheduled for June 2008. This is unusual.
THIRD:
The email contact listed in previous years was Ralph Feeback, rsfmfp@aol.com.
FOURTH:
On 22 March 2008 Jerry Bohm sent to me a copy of the flyer, which includes news, meeting schedule, hotel information, and a tear off coupon that is to be returned to Betty Pounds.

NAS SANFORD FLORIDA

AND

ALL SQUADRONS 1942-1968

40th REUNION NOTICE

26-29 JUNE 2008

FRA 147 BRANCH HOME:  3040 W SR46 SANFORD, FL  32771 407-330-1706

The RA5-C Aircraft is on display in the 4.5 acre Naval Air Station-Sanford Memorial Park, located at the Lake Mary Boulevard main entrance to Sanford International Airport.  Recently a Bronze Plaque, mounted near the Vigilante, was dedicated honoring the Enlisted Bombardier Navigators.

We received a second aircraft for the park on 9 December, 2003.  We have the only PV-1 Ventura Patrol Bomber in the United States. This is the first plane used at Sanford Training Command in May 1943.

A must to see this year is the Sanford Veterans Memorial at the lake front. There are over 2000 "Bricks" on display, representing Veterans from Civil War to current. Is your "Brick" there?

We have NAS History on display at the Museum in downtown Sanford, located on First Street.  There is also a display of NAS History at the Sanford/Orlando International Airport Baggage Pickup Area in Terminal B.  If you have any pictures or history from 1942 to 1968, please bring it (or photocopies) for us.

Each year our reunion keeps growing in attendance, with last years best yet.  It is always fun to see and exchange sea stories with old Shipmates.  We look forward to seeing You this year!
